From Merton Mavericks to Merton Eagles
Merton Eagles, as the club is now known, were originally presented to the adoring public as Merton Mavericks.

Merton Mavericks were founded in 1998 by Matt Seabrook and Steve Painter. The Mighty Mavericks started as a rag tag group of players who used to meet for a kick around on a Sunday morning at Dundonald Park in Wimbledon, with a lot of emphasis on "kick".

Over the summer months of '98, realising there were actually good players in thr group, discussions about forming as a real team started. Rumour of these discussions soon  became public knowledge and such was the clamour from people all over the South of England to be part of this amazing stage of evolution for amateur football, that runmour soon became fact and the Mavericks were born.

As a sugn of times to come, contact with local leagues and the Surrey FA were left to the last minute and we entered the Mitcham and District Sunday League and so a new page n history was turned.

The 6 years since the cluib was formed has seen a lot of changes for the Mavericks. After two season as the Merton Mavericks, a change of personnel on the board led to a change of team name. Having decided that Merton Mavericks was as stupid a name as it sounds, the hunt for a new team name began. Such was the impressive feedback from the players, that after much debate and discussion the Eagles became Merton Predators.

In truth, no suggestions were forth coming and Merton Predators was a last minute thought by the then notorius Secretaty Neil Belton. This name survived for three seasons, until another boardroom reshuffle saw the change to a more universally accepted Merton Eagles.

The club has seen a players and managers come and go, but with each season of weeding out the dead wood, a squad of quality players has been formed and success for the Eagles is surely only around the corner.
